1970's - Part 2

In April 1975 the collection of musicians named "Airborn" recorded a few songs in Gilfoy Studios. These included four songs composed by Craig Palmer and one by me.

  • Play Easy Goin' LeroyEasy Goin' LeroyEasy Goin' Leroy

Craig Palmer's tune from the early 1970's. He sings and plays tenor sax. I've got that funky wah-wah goin' strong on the electric guitar.

  • Play Munchkin ReleaseMunchkin ReleaseMunchkin Release

In 1972 I read a little from a book on the making of the Wizard of Oz film, which described little people in the cast engaging in heavy partying. This tune sprang from that image and the imagined joys they experienced.

  • Play UnitUnitUnit

Another instrumental by Craig. A modal tune with some post recording enhancements--the synthesizer was added by Craig after the recording was made.

  • Play Downtown Express YourselfDowntown Express YourselfDowntown Express Yourself

Craig's song, with lead vocal sung by David Clark.

  • Play Old FriendOld FriendOld Friend

Wistful tune composed and sung by Craig.

About the Recording

Airborn was the final incarnation of the group called Meatlocker, after Greg Alper moved on to bigger and better things (I'm still a big fan of his playing!). In April 1975 Craig Palmer got us time at Gilfoy Studio to record five tunes. I believe this studio time was in compensation for work he had done for the studio, and to fulfill a class requirement.

Personnel:

Robert Austin-drums
David Clark-lead vocal on Downtown Express Yourself, backing vocals
Steve Johnson-electric bass
Craig Palmer-saxophones, vocals, percussion, etc.
Dean Athans-electric guitar

All five tunes were recorded in less than four hours, with some additional tracks added after the session. The ensemble played "live" in the same studio room, and if my memory is accurate, we did only one or two takes of each song. The songs were all quite familiar to us, having played them in front of live audiences for months and years for a couple of them.
